The Media in Figures: Numbers and qualifications of journalists

THERE are around 60,000 journalists in the UK, which is a slight reduction on ten years ago – according to a survey conducted by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

Among the findings, the survey – of over 1,000 journalists and conducted last year – found that three-quarters of journalists are employed in the ‘mainstream’ media of newspapers, magazines and broadcasting, compared to nine out of ten in 2002.

And of the sectors that include the most journalists, it is newspapers, consisting of 24 per cent of the journalists surveyed.
